Michael is an idealist. A little fanatical but essentially loveable and dedicated. At 19, he is impressed by the Jesuits who were tortured and killed in the name of truth in Latin America. So in 1982 he travels to Bolivia as a Jesuit missionary-to-be, but seven years later he blows up a Kennedy memorial in La Paz and attacks a marine's barrack, killing a soldier. And then he kidnaps the Coca-Cola boss of Bolivia in a suicide mission.
